Advantages of electric vehicles

Currently, the prevalence of electric bikes or electric bicycles has increased. We are slowly moving towards the era of electric vehicles. As the price of fossil fuel is increasing day by day, there is concern about environmental pollution and its dire effects. Therefore, the demand for electric vehicles is increasing day by day. Because it is going to reduce the excessive cost of petrol and diesel fuel for vehicles. Not only this, these vehicles are eco-friendly and do not emit any carbon emissions or cause environmental pollution.

This blog will help you to choose a Best Battery For e-bike.

Best Battery For e-bike

Electric Bike Battery

Battery is one of the important parts of electric vehicle. Because the source of all the energy of an electric vehicle is its battery. Electric vehicle battery is an expensive thing, so we have to spend a lot of money for this battery when buying an electric vehicle. Let's see what kind of batteries we can use for our electric vehicles.

Two to three types of batteries are generally used for electric bikes or electric bicycles. One is lead acid battery, or maintenance free lead acid battery, the other is lithium ion battery or lithium polymer battery etc.

Lead acid batteries are generally cheaper and have a shorter lifespan, being larger and heavier. These batteries take a little longer to charge than lithium batteries. Charge and discharge cycles are reduced. The charging procedure is not very complicated. Maintenance free lead acid battery does not need to check/water the acid water level in the battery occasionally.

Lithium batteries are ideal batteries for e-bikes / electric cycles. However, its cost is much higher than that of lead acid batteries. The lifespan of these batteries is relatively longer than that of lead acid batteries. Can be charged quickly. Charge and discharge cycles are high. The size and weight of the battery is very small, so it can be installed in an electric bike or electric bicycle in a small place. The charging method of this battery is a bit complicated and should be charged with care. Many lithium cells are connected together in parallel and in series and a BMS (Battery Management System) circuit is used to charge the battery cells in the battery pack in a very controlled environment. BMS or battery management system monitors each battery cell or group of cells, whether any battery cell has low voltage, which battery cell needs more time to charge, if any battery cell is overcharging, if the battery is overheating, if the charged cell Charge line cut-off etc. etc. all things manage the work.

If we are using a battery pack made of lithium cells in our e-bike or electric cycle, then it is better to use SMPS charger of correct voltage and ampere rating, because with this charger the battery pack can be charged in a controlled manner. It increases battery life a lot.

There are many different types and prices of lithium cells available in the market these days. So in the case of battery selection, we have to buy a battery pack made with the right cells and check its performance by loading the battery before buying. Or we have to use a battery pack made by a well-known brand only then we can get our desired mileage.

If we make our own electric bicycle or electric bike, the battery wire should be thicker. Because when the electric bike or electric bicycle motor is running at sufficient load, a lot of current is drawn from the battery, so that enough current reaches from the battery to the motor, the battery and motor wire should be thick.

How do lithium batteries work?

The working mechanism of a lithium battery is quite complex, but it can be simply said that it generates and stores energy through an electrochemical reaction. Here's how lithium batteries work:

Lithium is the main component of batteries

1. Cathode:

The positive electrode, usually made of lithium copper oxide.

2. Anode:

Negative electrode, usually made of graphite.

3. Electrolyte:

Transfers ions between cathode and anode.

4. Separator:

Keeps cathode and anode apart but allows ions to migrate.

Best Battery For e-bike

Working Mechanism of Lithium Bttery

1. Charging:

   - When the battery is charged, electrons from the external power source move towards the anode.

   - Lithium ions dissociate from the cathode and move through the electrolyte to the anode.

   - This process accumulates lithium ions at the anode and it stores energy.

2. Discharging:

   - When the battery is discharged or used in a device, lithium ions leave the anode and return to the           cathode through the electrolyte.

   - During this time, electrons flow through the external circuit and provide power to the device.

   - This process deposits lithium ions at the cathode and powers the device.

Electrochemical Reactions

The movement of lithium ions and electrons in a lithium ion battery occurs through a redox reaction:

At Anode: Lithium atoms give up electrons to form lithium ions and pass through the electrolyte to the cathode.

-At the cathode: Lithium ions accept electrons to form lithium atoms and accumulate at the cathode.

Security and Performance

- A battery management system (BMS) is used to manage the proper functioning of the lithium battery, which controls the voltage, temperature and other parameters of the battery.

- When properly managed, lithium batteries provide high capacity and long-lasting performance.

This working mechanism of lithium batteries makes it suitable for high performance and long-lasting energy storage, which is widely used in various electronic devices and electric vehicles today.

Here are some important tips for handling and storage of lithium battery packs:

Handling Tips for Lithium Battery Packs

1. Take precautions during use:

   - Avoid hitting or dropping the battery pack.

   - Connect the battery poles correctly.

2. Charge properly:

   - Use the charger specified for the battery.

   - Be careful while charging the battery and avoid overcharging.

3. Avoid overheating:

   - Keep the battery away from direct sunlight or excessive heat.

   - If the battery temperature gets too high, give it time to cool down.

4. Use protection devices:

   - Use circuit breakers and fuses to prevent excess current from flowing.

Storage Tips for Lithium Battery Packs

1. Store in a dry and cool place:

   - Store the battery in a dry and cool place.

   - Keep away from moisture.

2. Store in half-charge state:

   - Keep the battery at 50%-70% charge for long term storage.

   - Do not store fully charged or fully discharged.

3. Check regularly:

   - Regularly check battery charge level while storing and recharge as needed.

   - Check the battery for any damage or leakage.

4. Keep separate:

   - Keep the battery away from other metal or sharp objects to avoid short circuit.

   - Be careful when storing multiple battery packs together.

Battery Recycling and Disposal

1. Dispose of properly:

   - Properly dispose of old or unused batteries.

   - Dispose of through a local recycling centre or battery recycling program.

2. Be eco-friendly:

   - Help reduce environmental damage by recycling batteries.

   - Do not dispose of used batteries in the environment.

Following these tips will make your lithium battery packs safer and last longer.
